If you don’t know what RPing is or have never done it, you’re missing out. It’s not for everyone, so I’m not making promises, but I personally love it. I get to have fun with friends and go into a whole world of my own creation.
However, everybody RPs different ways. This post will teach you some of the basics of RPing.
Pretty much all RP’s are . You send a text or DM or IM or PM or whatever, and it will say what your character does and what they say. However, there are two ways you can do this.
Option 1: Harry walks over to Hermione. “How are you, Hermione?” He asks, feeling nervous.
This one is more like telling a story. If you got a transcript of all of the messages, it would vaguely resemble a fanfiction. This is also generally a harder but not much harder version of RPing. However, you can show some things easier without sounding weird. Which brings me to Option 2.
Option 2: *walks over to Hermione* How are you, Hermione? *is nervous*
This one is simpler, as you just say what you do and what you say. This is a more commonly used form of RPing. It’s what I use most of the time in RP’s.
Another hard part of RPing is keeping the conversations straight. It’ll be like, Harry and Ron bromancing it up while Hermione is awkwardly flirting with Victor Krum. And although the person playing Ron might see that, Ron the character doesn’t know that Hermione flirted with Krum. But then the person playing Ron might forget that, and then he might have to make up that he has spies stalking her. It gets v confusing.
Every RP has different rules, and if you’re in multiple at once, it’s hard to keep them straight. The most important thins you need to remember are smut or not, what triggers people, and, surprisingly, what character you are. For example, If you’re in 2 RP’s: A Hogwarts RP where you play Harry, and a next-gen Hogwarts Rp where you play Albus. When I play two characters at once, they often seep into each other. And I seep into them. Albus becomes annoyingly heroic and also very nerdy and book-oriented. Harry becomes a bit scared and insecure, and also takes on some of my anti-social ness.
I think the best part of an RP is the community you build. No matter what character you are, you make friends on an RP. The characters your character interacts with become friends with your character, and you become friends with the people playing them because your character is you and their characters are them. I’ve made so many friends on RP’s, it’s great. Although a lot of RPing happens on the chat, people will often talk about their lives and a bit of what’s going on with them on the chat. You really get to know these people, and a lot about them from both them talking and their characters talking.
RPs are really great, and I hope you can join one some time!
